Have you ever wondered where rocks come from? They are tiny grains of at least two different minerals, bound together by a chemical reaction. They come in many different sizes, shapes, colours, textures, and strengths. There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic and they constantly change from one type to another in a cycle that takes thousands to millions of years! Geologists are the scientists who study rocks to find out more about the Earth's origin, composition, and history, including the development of life. So let’s look at rocks to travel back billions of years and then let’s travel into the centre of the Earth!
